Plastic Sheet and Rod
Plastic sheets and rods for fabrication, machining and industrial applications, with
material-selection support from IPS Flow Systems.
About Plastic Sheet and Rod
Plastic sheet and rod materials are used to manufacture fabricated products,
machined components and supporting parts for larger piping, process and
engineering systems.
Depending on the selected material, thermoplastic sheet, rod and block can be cut, drilled, bored, turned, threaded, bent, formed and welded.
IPS Flow Systems supplies a broad range of engineering plastics, including common thermoplastics and advanced technical materials. These products support fabricators, maintenance teams, original equipment manufacturers and industrial sites requiring dependable material shapes for workshop and site applications.
Selecting the correct material is important because chemical resistance, temperature capability, strength, wear resistance and fabrication behaviour differ between plastic grades.

Key Features of Plastic Sheet and Rod
Plastic sheets and rods can provide chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, useful temperature performance and straightforward fabrication when the correct material is selected.
There is no single engineering plastic that is best for every application. PVC-U may suit general fabrication and chemical service, while Corzan PVC-C may be preferred where higher temperatures are involved. Polypropylene, polyethylene and PVDF each offer different combinations of toughness, rigidity, wear resistance and chemical performance. Material selection should consider the environment, operating temperature, chemical media, mechanical loading and proposed fabrication method.
Chemical Resistance
Chemical resistance depends on the media, concentration, operating temperature and duration of exposure. A material that performs well with one chemical may be unsuitable for another, even where the applications appear similar.
For chemical storage, dosing, treatment or corrosive-service applications, provide IPS with details of the chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions. This allows the proposed plastic sheet or rod material to be checked before ordering.
Temperature Capability
The temperature capability of plastic sheet and rod is material and application dependent. Indicative material limits should not be used without also considering chemical exposure, mechanical load, fabrication method, duration of service and an appropriate safety margin.
PVC-U, Corzan PVC-C, polypropylene, polyethylene and PVDF behave differently at elevated temperatures. The exact grade and supplier data should therefore be checked against the intended operating conditions.
Machining and Fabrication Suitability
Thermoplastic sheet can be formed, bent, welded and fabricated into tanks, guards, linings, ductwork and other finished products.
Rod, block and sheet can also be machined using conventional methods such as cutting, drilling, boring, turning and threading.
Where welding is required, the welding rod should match the parent sheet material and grade wherever specified. Correct material matching helps maintain joint consistency and chemical compatibility.
Dimensional Stability and Durability
Durability varies according to the polymer, grade, thickness and service conditions. Impact, abrasion, creep, thermal expansion, ultraviolet exposure, chemical contact and support design can all influence long-term performance.
Some materials are selected for toughness or low friction, while others are chosen for rigidity, heat resistance or chemical service. The environment, load and manufacturing method should be defined before selecting the material.
Plastic Sheet and Rod Materials
PVC-U Sheet, Rod and Profiles
PVC-U is a rigid and economical engineering thermoplastic with very good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and good mechanical strength.
It also provides good electrical insulation properties and self-extinguishing or flame-retardant behaviour.
PVC-U is readily machined, fabricated, solvent cemented and welded. Its typical
service temperature is approximately 0°C to 60°C, subject to chemical exposure, load and application conditions.
PVC-U extruded sheet is available in grey, white and clear blue-tint variants.
Polyethylene protective film options are available on selected products.
PVC-U welding rod, flat bar, L-profiles and U-profiles can be used for fabrication, lining, trimming and structural detailing.
Corzan® PVC-C Sheet and Rod
Corzan® PVC-C, also known as CPVC, is a corrosion-resistant thermoplastic
designed for more demanding temperature and chemical-service applications than standard PVC-U.
It can be bent, formed, machined and welded into storage tanks, scrubbers,
ventilation systems, fume-handling equipment and other fabricated process
components.
Temperature capability is application dependent. Corzan guidance can extend to approximately 93°C in pressure applications and 104°C in suitable non-pressure applications, while individual sheet data may specify a range closer to 95°C.
The data for the exact sheet, rod or welding-rod grade should therefore be checked before specification.
Corzan FM4910 sheet and matching welding rod may be available for applications requiring an appropriate cleanroom or fire-performance classification. The current grade certificate and listing status should be confirmed before use.
Polypropylene Sheet, Block and Welding Rod
Polypropylene is a lightweight and weldable thermoplastic with excellent resistance to many acids, alkalis and organic solvents. It has low water absorption and useful thermal and electrical insulation properties. Polypropylene performance varies by grade.
Copolymer polypropylene generally provides improved toughness and impact resistance, making it suitable for a wide range of fabrication work. Homopolymer polypropylene provides greater rigidity and chemical stability and may offer a higher upper service temperature. Polypropylene sheet, block and welding rod can be used for tanks, guards, process equipment, machined components and other chemically resistant fabricated products. Grade-specific information should be checked before making claims about temperature, fire performance, food contact or outdoor use.
Polyethylene Sheet and Rod
Polyethylene is a tough, lightweight thermoplastic with good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and useful impact performance.
Different polyethylene grades provide different levels of stiffness, wear resistance and low-friction behaviour.
Polyethylene Sheet and Rod
Polyethylene is a tough, lightweight thermoplastic with good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and useful impact performance.
Different polyethylene grades provide different levels of stiffness, wear resistance and low-friction behaviour.
PE300/HDPE
PE300, commonly described as HDPE, is a strong and readily fabricated polyethylene grade.
It provides good chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and useful impact strength.
Common applications include general fabrication, tanks, hoppers, liners, guards and engineering components.
PE500/HMWPE
PE500, also known as HMWPE, offers improved wear resistance and impact performance compared with standard HDPE.
It is often selected for wear strips, cutting surfaces, buffers, fenders and components exposed to repeated impact or sliding contact.
PE1000/UHMWPE
PE1000, or UHMWPE, provides a very low coefficient of friction, high abrasion resistance and excellent impact performance.
Typical applications include guide rails, wear strips, sliding parts and bulk-handling components where friction and wear are key considerations.
Regenerated PE1000 may also be available here a recycled or regenerated grade is acceptable.
Food-contact, UV, antistatic, colour and mechanical requirements should be confirmed before specification.
PVDF Sheet, Rod and Welding Rod
PVDF is a high-performance, partially fluorinated thermoplastic with excellent chemical resistance, low flammability, good ageing resistance and strong mechanical
properties. It also offers low permeability, good abrasion resistance and a broad operating-temperature range.
PVDF may be suitable for temperatures up to approximately 140°C, depending on the grade, mechanical stress and chemical exposure.
PVDF sheet, fabric-backed sheet, pressed sheet, rod and welding rod are used for chemical-resistant fabrication, lining systems, tanks and demanding process
equipment. AGRU supplies PVDF natural sheet, fabric-backed sheet, fabric-backed rolls and welding rod for industrial fabrication applications.
Matching welding rod should be used where required by the sheet manufacturer. Standard industrial PVDF sheet should not be described as high-purity unless the exact supplied grade is specifically manufactured and approved for high-purity service.
Applications of Plastic Sheet and Rod
Plastic sheet and rod materials are used across fabrication, maintenance, chemical processing, water treatment and general industrial engineering.
They may form part of a larger thermoplastic installation or be used to manufacture independent guards, tanks, linings and machined components.
The selected material must suit the chemical, thermal and mechanical demands of the application.
Fabrication and Tank Construction
Plastic sheet is commonly used to fabricate tanks, bunds, enclosures, ductwork,
linings and fume-handling equipment.
Heat forming, bending and welding techniques can transform flat sheet into
components designed around a specific site layout or process requirement.
For example, thermoplastic sheet may be used to create containment trays, dosing-
system bunds or chemical tank components.
The sheet and welding rod should be selected as a compatible system.
Machined Components and Bespoke Parts
Plastic sheet, rod and block can be machined into components such as spacers,
bushes, wear strips, guards, plates and OEM parts.
Conventional processes including cutting, drilling, boring, turning and threading can
be used, subject to the behaviour of the selected material.
This allows maintenance teams and manufacturers to produce replacement or
custom parts from a consistent engineering material.
Water Treatment and Chemical Dosing Infrastructure
Plastic sheet and rod are widely used around water treatment and chemical dosing
systems.
Applications can include:
- dosing skids;
- containment bunds;
- splash guards;
- tank components;
- fabricated pipework ancillaries;
- equipment guards;
- support and mounting components.
The chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions should be
checked before choosing the material.
Industrial Processing and Corrosive Environments
Outdoor exposure, ultraviolet radiation, high temperature and mechanical loading
should also be considered during material selection.
OEM Equipment, Maintenance and Site Modifications
Plastic sheet and rod can be used for OEM machinery, replacement parts, plant upgrades, emergency maintenance and planned shutdown work.
A sheet may be fabricated into a machinery guard, while a rod or block may be machined into a replacement spacer, guide or bush.

FAQs
What colours are plastic sheets available in?
Available colours depend on the material, grade and product format. Contact IPS to confirm the current colour, dimensions, stock position and lead time
How durable are plastic sheets?
The durability of plastic sheet depends on the material, grade, thickness and service conditions. Chemical exposure, temperature, ultraviolet light, impact, abrasion, support spacing and fabrication quality can all affect performance.
A sheet used indoors as a machine guard will have different requirements from one used as a chemical tank lining or outdoor containment component. The material should therefore be selected according to the actual duty.
Which plastic sheet material is most commonly used?
There is no single plastic sheet material that is best for every application. PVC-U, polypropylene and polyethylene are commonly used for general fabrication and industrial work. PVC-U provides rigidity and broad chemical resistance. Polypropylene offers useful chemical resistance and weldability. Polyethylene provides toughness, impact performance and low-friction options.
Corzan PVC-C and PVDF may be selected for more demanding temperature or chemical applications. The most suitable material should be chosen according to the operating environment rather than frequency of use
Can plastic sheet be welded?
Many thermoplastic sheets can be welded using a compatible welding process and matching welding rod.
The correct welding method depends on the material and grade. PVC-U, PVC-C, polypropylene, polyethylene and PVDF each have their own preparation and welding requirements. The sheet manufacturer’s welding instructions should be followed
Can plastic rod be machined?
Yes. Plastic rod can be cut, drilled, bored, turned and threaded to produce components such as bushes, spacers, rollers and replacement parts. Machining speeds, tool geometry and cooling requirements vary between plastic materials. The finished part should also be checked for dimensional stability, load and operating temperature.
