Polypropylene Pipework Systems

Our polypropylene is part of the AGRUCHEM range of products. Often referred to as PP, it is a lightweight thermoplastic used in industrial, chemical, water-treatment, drainage and process pipework, wherever chemical resistance, corrosion resistance and reliable welded joints matter.

It is a common choice for systems carrying process fluids, aggressive chemicals, wastewater and other industrial media, particularly where a fully welded plastic system is preferred over solvent-cemented jointing.

Two grades appear across the polypropylene range. PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer) and PP-H (polypropylene homopolymer) are both used in industrial polypropylene piping systems, and the choice between them comes down to operating pressure, temperature and mechanical load.

PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer)

PP-R is part of the AGRUCHEM polypropylene range. It is the more flexible of the two grades, which gives it a clear advantage in fitting manufacture, particularly for pressure resistance. Every AGRUCHEM polypropylene fitting is produced from PP-R, and PP-R pipes are available within the range as well.

PP-H (polypropylene homopolymer)

PP-H is also part of the AGRUCHEM polypropylene range. It offers higher rigidity
and greater dimensional stability, making it well suited to pipe production.

The two grades work together without difficulty: welding PP-H to PP-R is a well
established and reliable process, backed by decades of proven use in the field.

At IPS we supply polypropylene pipes, fittings, valves, flanges, adaptors and related components for pressure and drainage applications, in a range of sizes and configurations to suit the product range and the job in hand.

For pressure applications, polypropylene should always be specified using the
relevant manufacturers published technical data. Temperature, pressure, pipe size, material grade, jointing method, chemical exposure and operating conditions all affect final suitability. Pressure capability falls as operating temperature rises, so ratings should always be checked against the actual service conditions.

Key features of polypropylene pipework systems

Excellent Chemical Resistance

Good chemical and corrosion resistance

Polypropylene offers good resistance to many industrial chemicals, including a range of acids, alkalis, salts, and process fluids. This makes it a practical choice for chemical processing, water treatment, wastewater, and other corrosive-duty applications. Chemical suitability depends on the exact fluid, concentration, temperature, pressure, and operating conditions. Compatibility should always be checked against the relevant technical data before specification or installation.

Rigid and Durable

Heat-welded jointing

Polypropylene systems are joined using heat-fusion methods rather than solvent cement. Common jointing methods include socket fusion and butt fusion, with other techniques used where suitable for the product range and installation. Correct joint preparation, welding equipment, operator training, cooling time, and installation conditions are essential for long-term system performance.

Lightweight & Easy to Install

Lightweight and easy to handle

Polypropylene is lighter than many traditional metal pipework materials, making it easier to handle and install on site. This can be useful in plant rooms, process areas, treatment systems, and installations where corrosion-resistant pipework is required without adding unnecessary weight.

Smooth Bore and Flow Efficiency

Smooth internal bore

Polypropylene pipework has a smooth internal bore, helping to support efficient flow and reduce friction losses. This can help maintain system performance when the pipework is correctly sized, installed, and maintained.

Wide Temperature & Pressure Range

Suitable for elevated-temperature process duties

Polypropylene is often selected for industrial and process applications where chemical resistance and elevated-temperature performance are both important. The allowable temperature range depends on the specific product, material grade, pressure rating, and service conditions. At lower temperatures, impact performance should be reviewed carefully. At higher temperatures, pressure derating must be applied in line with the relevant technical data.

Third Party Accredited

Broad system choice

IPS supplies polypropylene components across a range of pipework requirements, including pipe, fittings, valves, flanges, adaptors, and supporting accessories. Our team can help customers select compatible products for the required application, pressure class, temperature, and jointing method.

Common applications

Polypropylene is commonly used for:

  • Chemical process pipework
  • Industrial fluid handling
  • Water-treatment systems
  • Wastewater and drainage applications
  • Chemical dosing and transfer duties
  • Hot and cold process water systems
  • Laboratory and process drainage
  • Food and beverage-related duties where suitable approvals apply
  • Potable-water contact applications where relevant approvals apply
  • Above-ground pipework installations
  • Below-ground installations where correctly designed and installed

Suitability should always be confirmed against the application, chemical compatibility, pressure, temperature, approvals, jointing method, and installation environment.

Why choose IPS for polypropylene pipework?

IPS supports customers who need more than a pipe supplier. Our team can help with product selection, technical compatibility, sizing, pressure ratings, specification queries, fusion jointing guidance, installation considerations, and supporting documentation.

Whether you are replacing an existing system, working from a drawing, or specifying pipework for a new installation, IPS can help match the right polypropylene products to the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is polypropylene pipework used for?

Polypropylene pipework is used for industrial, chemical, water-treatment, drainage, and process applications where corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, low weight, and reliable heat-welded joints are important.

How is polypropylene pipework joined?

Polypropylene pipework is joined using heat-fusion methods rather than solvent cement. Common methods include socket fusion and butt fusion, with other jointing techniques used where suitable for the product range and application.

Can polypropylene be used for chemical applications?

Polypropylene offers good resistance to many industrial chemicals, including a range of acids, alkalis, salts, and process fluids. Compatibility must always be checked against the exact chemical, concentration, temperature, pressure, and operating conditions before selection.

What temperature range is polypropylene suitable for?

Polypropylene temperature capability depends on the product range, material grade, pressure rating, and service conditions. It is often used for elevated-temperature process duties, but pressure capability reduces as temperature increases. The relevant manufacturer’s pressure and temperature data should always be checked before specification.

Can polypropylene be used outdoors?

Polypropylene can be used in suitable above-ground installations, but outdoor applications should consider UV exposure, temperature movement, support spacing, expansion, mechanical protection, and the suitability of all fittings and valves used in the system. Where pipework is exposed to direct sunlight, protective measures may be required.

Can polypropylene be used underground?

Polypropylene may be used below ground where the system is designed and installed correctly. Ground conditions, bedding, support, external loads, jointing method, movement, and service conditions should all be reviewed before installation.

Does polypropylene require maintenance?

Polypropylene typically requires less maintenance than many metal systems because it does not corrode or scale in the same way. However, regular checks should still be carried out for damage, support movement, leaks, valve operation, joint condition, and signs of external stress.
