Weld-On 724 CPVC Solvent Cement: Chemical-Resistant Solution

Industrial pipework carrying aggressive chemicals needs more than a general-purpose cement. Weld-On® 724™ CPVC is made for demanding chemical applications where the quality of every joint matters.

This premium, industrial-grade CPVC cement combines high strength with excellent chemical resistance. Its heavy-bodied formula also helps installers form dependable connections where standard products may not be suitable.

What Is Weld-On 724 CPVC Solvent Cement?

Weld-On 724 is a heavy-bodied, medium-setting CPVC solvent cement for industrial piping systems. It is suitable for all classes and schedules of compatible CPVC pipe and fittings with an interference fit, including Schedule 80 systems up to 12″ or 315 mm in diameter.

The cement can also be used on PVC industrial piping systems for chemical applications. Its heavy-bodied consistency is applied using established solvent-welding methods, and the pipe and fittings must have an interference fit.

Why Choose Weld-On 724 for Chemical Applications?

Standard pipe cement may deteriorate when regularly exposed to concentrated chemicals. Weld-On 724 is formulated for CPVC piping systems carrying acids, bases, salts and hypochlorites, making it a practical choice for demanding process environments.

Its chemical-resistant formula, high-strength bond and controlled medium setting time give installers a dependable option for industrial piping systems for chemical applications.

Resistant to Aggressive Chemicals

Weld-On 724 is designed for systems carrying acids and other corrosive substances. Completed joints can resist high concentrations of sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric and hydrofluoric acid when the product is selected and installed correctly.

It is also suitable for piping that carries bases, salt solutions and hypochlorite. Actual suitability should always be checked against the operating temperature, pressure, concentration and conditions of the complete piping system.

Reliable and Durable Pipe Connections

The heavy-bodied cement spreads evenly across the surfaces being joined, which matters on larger-diameter industrial pipework where a thorough, even coating is needed both to achieve a sound weld and to ease the pipe into the fitting. The pipe and fittings must still have an interference fit, as specified by Weld-On.

Once the pipe and fitting are properly prepared, Weld-On 724 forms a strong solvent-welded connection rather than simply bonding the two surfaces together. Correct preparation, assembly and curing remain essential to long-term joint performance.

Applications of Weld-On 724 Solvent Cement

Weld-On 724 CPVC cement is intended for industrial systems where chemical resistance is a key part of the specification. Typical applications include:

  • Chemical processing: CPVC and compatible PVC pipework carrying acids, bases, salts and other corrosive process chemicals.
  • Water treatment systems: Chemical dosing and treatment lines, including systems that carry hypochlorite solutions.
  • Industrial piping: Process pipework requiring a premium, high-strength chemical-resistant solvent cement.
  • Wastewater applications: Pipe installations within wastewater plants and other environments exposed to aggressive fluids.

Product selection should be based on the pipe material, chemical concentration, operating pressure, temperature and the wider system design.

How to Use Weld-On 724 Solvent Cement Correctly

Before installation, confirm that the pipe, fitting, cement and primer are compatible. Cut the pipe square, remove burrs and clean away dirt, oil and moisture. The mating surfaces must be dry and properly prepared.

Weld-On 724 should always be used with Weld-On P-70 Primer. Apply the primer and cement in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, assemble the joint immediately and hold it in position to prevent movement. Allow the full recommended cure time before pressure testing or introducing chemicals.

Installation conditions, pipe diameter, temperature and humidity can all affect set and cure times. Refer to the current product data and safety sheets before starting work.

Important Safety and Compliance Information

Weld-On solvent cements must never be used in plastic piping systems that carry, or are being pressure tested with, compressed air or other gases, including air-over-water booster systems. They must also not be used in conjunction with flue gas ventilation systems. Pressure testing should be carried out hydrostatically once the joints have fully cured.

Dry granular calcium hypochlorite must not be used as a disinfecting material in potable water pipework jointed with solvent cement. Contact between the granules or pellets, or their vapours, and solvent cements or primers can result in a violent chemical reaction. Where lines need to be purified, a chlorinated water solution should be pumped through the system instead, and dry granular calcium hypochlorite should not be stored or used near cements and primers.

Weld-On 724 is a flammable, solvent-based product. Use it only with adequate ventilation, keep it away from heat, sparks and open flames, avoid breathing the vapour and take precautions against static discharge. Particular care is needed in confined or below-ground spaces such as trenches, chambers and ducts, because solvent vapours are heavier than air and can collect at low level. Obtain the current Safety Data Sheet for the product as supplied in your region and use it to inform your COSHH assessment, ventilation and personal protective equipment requirements before work begins.

Solvent welding should be carried out by competent installers, who should satisfy themselves that sound joints can be produced under the conditions on site. Always read the jointing instructions supplied by the pipe and fitting manufacturer alongside the current Weld-On product data and safety data sheets. Final material and cement selection should be based on in-service testing and evaluation by the responsible engineer and end user.

FAQs

Can Weld-On 724 be used with CPVC pipes?

Yes. Weld-On 724 is an industrial-grade CPVC cement made for compatible CPVC pipe and fittings across all classes and schedules. It can be used on interference-fit systems up to 12″ or 315 mm in diameter, including Schedule 80 pipework.

It may also be used on compatible PVC industrial piping systems for chemical applications.

What industries use chemical-resistant solvent cement?

Chemical-resistant solvent cement is commonly used in chemical processing, water treatment, wastewater management, semiconductor production and other industrial facilities.

It’s useful for piping systems that are carrying really harsh chemicals such as acids, bases, salt solutions and hypochlorite. That said, you need to make sure you check the specific cement you choose, along with the type of piping you are using, to make sure it’s suitable for the job at hand, given the sort of chemicals you are dealing with and how they will be handled.

Do I need primer when using Weld-On 724?

Yes. Weld-On specifies that Weld-On 724 should always be used with Weld-On P-70 Primer. The primer prepares and softens the surfaces before the cement is applied, helping the pipe and fitting form a proper solvent-welded joint.

Always follow the current Weld-On application instructions, cure-time guidance and site safety requirements.
